Conforming variable frame rate footage - best practice

Hi there!

I have some ProRes 422 footage recorded via Wirecast that I'm planning to edit with. The file has a variable target 30 fps, since Wirecast sometimes drops frames to prioritize the stream itself.

I know the variable 30p footage need to be conformed to a fixed 30p file before pulling it into an NLE. Just wanted to check if EditReady's Framerate Adjustment feature meant for this? From the docs it says "This setting adjusts the playback rate of your media, it does not add or remove frames from your footage."

If not, I was thinking of just using Compressor.

Thanks!

And to clarify what I meant about "how wirecast behaves" - if they actually just duplicate frames in order to fill gaps when they're falling behind, EditReady wouldn't be able to help with that.

Hi there - it may depend on how exactly Wirecast behaves when it drops frames.  Our frame retimer will just assign a fixed duration to each frame, in the target timebase.  As you noted, we won't synthesize new frames, but from the perspective of the NLE, it should just see a continuous stream of frames, each with a fixed duration.
